She will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.

Matthew 1:21

Today I am sitting in my office surrounded by gifts. Mandy and I have already had two different Christmas celebrations with different sides of the family. As usual, Mandy has received many unique and beautiful gifts and I have received my favorite gift cards. Our house has been decorated for Christmas for almost a month because Mandy likes to start the season early. I like to consider myself an exterior illumination expert. That is just a fancy way of saying that I am amazing at putting up outdoor Christmas lights. I like for our house to look classy, but I also want the planes that fly overhead to wonder if they should land in our front yard. As much time as I spend on the exterior of the house; Mandy spends an equal amount of time on the inside. Our tree always looks amazing and everything gets covered in a fresh coat of Christmas decorations. I love all of our decorations, but there is really only one thing that has to go up in our home at Christmas. Several years ago my mom went to Israel with a group from Roswell Street. Mom bought Mandy and I one of the most beautiful nativity sets that I have ever seen. The nativity is made out of olive wood and all of the pieces are hand carved. The nativity is so beautiful that Mandy and I have talked about leaving it up year round. Each year when we get the box down and arrange the nativity set in our living room, I always wonder what it must have been like to be there at the birth of Christ. I wonder what Joseph was thinking when the angel appeared to him and told him about the birth of the savior. Out of all of our huge decorations, I enjoy this small nativity set the most.

In the same way that I am drawn to this nativity set, I am also drawn to Matthew 1:21 in the Christmas story. This small verse at the beginning of the Christmas story paints the most beautiful picture of what Christmas is all about. This verse is the fulfillment of a prophesy that had been spoken hundreds of years prior. Mary would give birth to a son and the angel’s instructions were to call Him by the name Jesus. There are Christians and non-Christians that could tell you that this is what Christmas is all about. However, I am drawn to this verse because of the second half. There is a reason that the angel instructed Joseph to give the child this name. The reason for the name was because it meant “God with us.” There would have been no other name that would have covered the purpose of this child other than Jesus. The purpose of this name was to show the exact reason that Jesus was born. The second half of this verse gives us this reason; to save His people from their sins. Christmas is all about the birth of Christ and His birth takes on new meaning when we focus on its purpose. When I look at the baby Jesus in our nativity set I am reminded that Christmas is all about celebrating His birth, and His birth is all about saving us from our sins.

So what does this mean for you and I today? I believe that it is easy to say that Christmas is all about the birth of Christ. However, what if someone asked you why Christmas is all about the birth of Christ? Mathew 1:21 answers this question. The reason that Christmas is all about the birth of Christ is because He is the only one that has ever been born who could save us from our sins. So the next time that you see a nativity set and you are reminded that Christmas is all about Christ, remember the REASON it is all about Christ. The reason is because He is the only one who can save us from our sins. Merry Christmas!!

I wait for the Lord, my soul does wait, and in His word I do hope.

Psalms 130:

Yesterday in the Connections service at Roswell Street, Bobby Murphy preached a sermon that applied to everyone in the room. The message centered on the topic of marriage. Married couples were able to see how to make their marriage better, while those who are single were able to see that waiting on the Lord to provide a godly partner is one of the most important aspects of being single. The truth of the matter is that waiting is no fun at all unless we are reminded of the reward for our time spent waiting. If Mandy and I go to Chili’s to eat dinner and there is an hour long wait to get a table, then I am going somewhere else to eat. The reason that I would go somewhere else to eat is because Chili’s food is not worth the wait. However, if I go to Chops in Buckhead (which I have only been to once because it is so expensive) and there is an hour long wait for a table then I will gladly wait. The reason that I would wait an hour for a table at Chops is because my reward will be a steak the size of my head that is so perfect that I will dream about it for years to come. The wait is worth the reward. I will give you another example of what I mean. Mandy and I went to the mall last week to do some Christmas shopping. One of Mandy’s favorite stores is a store called Francesca’s. This store has absolutely nothing to offer a man. Mandy could stay in this store for hours trying on everything they have and making comments like; “this is cute” or “oh my goodness, this is just too perfect.” All of this takes place while I am looking for an escape route out of this store. Francesca’s has nothing to offer me, so why would I wait around in the store when Sears is 30 feet away and they have the Dewalt 4 tool power combo kit on sale? I will always choose power tools over Francesca’s any day of the week because I believe that an hour spent in Sears is worth my time! However, when we get home and Mandy tries on her new clothes from Francesca’s, I realize that her time spent in that store was worth it because she looks so beautiful; and that makes it worth it to me!

The truth is that waiting is not fun unless you realize the reward for your patients. When it comes to relationships, waiting on the Lord to provide a godly partner is worth any amount of time. The Psalmist says uses Psalm 130:5 to confirm the importance of waiting, and how it should be done. This particular Psalm can be broken down into three parts. First, the psalmist says “I wait for the Lord.” This statement shows the human side of the act of waiting because the psalmist says “I” wait for the Lord. There has to be an effort on our part when it comes to waiting. At some point we will get tired of waiting and want to make things happen, but this is not God’s desire. Second, the psalmist says “my soul does wait.” This statement gives an indication that there is a deeper, more spiritual need when it comes to waiting on the Lord. The reason for this is because our human efforts in waiting will eventually fail us and cause us to get away from God’s plan. When this happens we must have a strong relationship with the Lord to help us continue waiting. Lastly, the psalmist says “and in His word I do hope.” This statement gives us the exact place that we should go while we are waiting. God’s word provides our answers in times of waiting. The Bible reminds us of the reward of our waiting and gives us the reason to continue seeking God’s will through His word.

So what does this mean for you and I today? Waiting is not easy, fun, or exciting. When our flesh gets tired of waiting we often go to a place that goes against God’s will. The good news is that a strong relationship with the Lord and His word will keep our flesh from allowing us to settle for anything other than God’s perfect will. Maybe you are single and waiting on God’s perfect mate for you. Maybe you are waiting on God to provide you with a job. Maybe you are waiting on God to provide you with a ministry opportunity. Regardless of why you are waiting, you need to know that God has a perfect plan for you and you can find out all about it by asking him in prayer and seeking Him through His word. As you go through this week, remember that the reward is worth waiting on God. Seek Him first and allow God to provide your reward.

Better is the little of the righteous than the abundance of many wicked.

Psalm 37:16

Yesterday at Roswell Street everyone had the opportunity to hear Dr. Easley preach a message about the world mission offering. Roswell Street is one of the most committed churches when it comes to giving to missions. The missions budget is broken bow in three categories; across the seas, across the states, and across the streets. These three areas help to cover the most important areas of missions. I love the fact that Dr. Easley gave some real examples of the needs that missionaries need in the field. Some of these things are expensive and require a lot of work, and some of them are very simple and inexpensive. One of the coolest things about giving to missions is the fact that even the smallest amount of money can make a difference for the kingdom of God.

When I was a student minister I partnered with two missionaries in West Virginia to help them spread the gospel in a small town in southern West Virginia. The name of the town was War West Virginia. War is a very small place with very big needs. Before our first trip to War, the missionaries asked us to bring as much bottled water and toilet paper as we could possibly bring. I thought that this was a strange request, but we loaded up a trailer full of nothing but water and toilet paper. The water was needed because the drinking water in War was so bad that you couldn’t even brush your teeth with it. I could not believe that there was a place in America that had such bad drinking water that you couldn’t even brush your teeth! The toilet paper was a different story. Probably 95% of the people in War lived well below the poverty line and counted on well fare to get the essential needs of everyday life. At the beginning of the month when well fare checks were distributed, the streets of war would be full of people going to the grocery store to get all of the supplies they needed for the month. One of the first items that they would run out of before the month was over was toilet paper. Our mission team would walk down the street with cases of toilet paper and people would run to us and ask what they had to do to get a roll of toilet paper. I could not believe how many people were willing to do anything for a roll of toilet paper! With each roll that we handed out to the people, we would share the gospel and give them a Bible. I personally witnessed 4 people come to know Jesus as Lord all because they were given a roll of toilet paper.

The reason that I am telling you that story is the same reason that David wrote Psalm 37. We often get a distorted view of missions. Some people think that you have to build houses, or you have to go half way around the world, or you have to do a big project in order to do missions. The truth of the matter is that missions start with a heart willing to go into the entire world and preach the gospel. In the same way; giving to missions begins in the heart. The church is filled with people who are able to give more than I could ever think about giving. At the same time, our church is also filled with people who may only be able to spare a few dollars. Regardless of which category you are in, you have to remember that it begins in the heart. I have been on mission trips that provided entire houses to deserving families, and mission trips that provided toilet paper to those who could not afford it. In each case I saw the same gratitude and appreciation on behalf of the people who received the house and the ones that received the toilet paper. The reason that this happens is because each of these things were given with hearts that desired to see the message of the gospel taken to people who needed it.

So what does this mean for you and I today? First, we have to realize that God can do the same amazing work with a roll of toilet paper that He can do with an entire house. When God calls us to give to missions, His desire is that we do so with a heart that is focused on righteousness. When we go before the Lord and seek His will in how we give, God uses the biggest and smallest amount to accomplish His will. Second, we have to be willing to give no matter how big or small our amount may be. The only way that we can be made righteous is through faith in Jesus Christ. When we place our faith in Christ, and believe that He can do abundantly more that we could ever ask or think (Ephesians 3:20), then we see that God’s will can be accomplished with both the largest and smallest amounts that are given to Him.

Pray that God would lay on your heart the amount that you should give to the missions offering. You may be able to give abundantly, or you may be able to give a little. You may be able to give a house, or you may be able to give a roll of toilet paper. No matter which group you are a part of, give out of the righteousness that He has given to you.
